DDOTM: The always funny Ali Wong

[um_bookmarks_button]

The next Divorcee Diva of the Month that we’re proud to profile is Ali Wong. She hasn’t been divorced for long (compared with last month’s DDOTM anyway), but she’s proving that there is much life and creative potential to be found afterwards. And while there are so many reasons to love Ali Wong, we’re sharing our top five below…

She makes us laugh

She puts together a comedy set like no other and mines her life for jokes, whether that means making fun of her pregnancy, her marriage, her ex-husband, or her divorce. Her first Netflix special, Baby Cobra, was filmed while she was 7 months pregnant and shot her to stardom. It was the first time that a woman had filmed an hour-long special while pregnant.

Since then, she’s done three more standup specials for Netflix, each documenting a different phase of her life. And her comedy is not for the faint of heart. Her material is as raunchy as it comes and I for one, found it refreshing to watch a small, cute, bespectacled, female Asian comedian making jokes about eating ass.

She’s made history

Her acting range is impressive. Of course she can do comedy, but with Beef, she also displayed her ability to do darker and more dramatic work. Not only did it pay off, but Ali Wong made history when in 2024, she became the first Asian to win both a Golden Globe and an Emmy for best female actor in a limited series.

She’s a NYT-bestselling author

In addition to writing for television and film, she also wrote a NYT bestselling memoir, which doubles as a book of life advice cleverly written as letters to her daughters. Titled Dear Girls: Intimate Tales, Untold Secrets and Advice for Living Your Best Life, It’s as funny and charming as you’d expect coming from her. One of her best lessons was about moving away from home.

“At some point you gotta go. Mama loves you but it’s important to get out of your hometown and get the f*** away from your family…When I got away from them, I finally felt like I could be the person I was meant to be.”

She can joke about her divorce

Her most recent Netflix standup special, Single Lady, is all about her divorce and the aftermath. She doesn’t shy away from uncomfortable topics, like getting on dating apps after being married for ten years, and jokes about her sexual escapades with both older and younger men abound. It’s also interesting to hear about divorce through the eyes of a rich person because, as it turns out, dating as a millionaire has both its ups and downs. But don’t take our word for it. Earlier this year, Ali Wong won a Golden Globe for best Standup Special.

She’s with the internet’s boyfriend

Proving that it is possible to find someone better after your divorce, she’s now dating Bill Hader and our adoration has only grown. Anyone who can get with Stefan has an eternal place in our hearts.

Ali has shown us that she who gets the last laugh, especially when it comes to divorce, will take that laughter all the way to the bank. And who doesn’t love that energy?
