I wouldn’t have thought to speak to a divorce attorney before I separated from my husband if a girlfriend hadn’t told me that I should. Just to ask questions. “To protect yourself,” I remember her saying.
I wouldn’t have taken the job in Switzerland after my divorce if my first friend, my sister, hadn’t said, “You should go. I’ll miss you. But you should go.”
And I wouldn’t have finally felt like I belonged somewhere if I hadn’t met my girls while I was living in Japan.
Everything changed when I found my girls.
With Galentine’s Day just past and the confidence of a divorcée who makes holidays her own, we are kicking off a month of friendship.
To start, we made this playlist for you on Spotify. It is filled with songs about friendship that we love.
When I was building this list, I asked my high school bestie what songs she’d add. We recently reconnected and I’m really enjoying texting her silly, high school shit like videos of me grocery shopping in Switzerland.)
I put a song on that reminds me of my sister. Another song that reminds me of one of my friends here in Lausanne. And a song that reminds me of a friend I don’t talk to much anymore.
You might get some major feelings when listening to these songs about friendship
If you do, we recommend that you lean into those feels for a bit and follow where they’re going. If some of those thoughts and feelings make you sad and miss the last love of your life, let yourself feel that way for a bit.
Then pick up your phone, and call your girlfriend.
She’ll be happy to hear from you too 🙂
Should divorced women embrace Galentine’s Day?
I know, I know–is a playlist about friendship for Galentine’s Day/Valentine’s Day really something that should be in the Dispatched Divorcée canon?
Yes.
We are embracing it because we are on a mission to rebrand “love” and knock it down from being the best thing in the world that someone should shoot for (because we all know how that really can work out). Instead, let’s lift up and celebrate other kinds of relationships, like our female friendships.
So, like, how do we do friendship? How do we celebrate Galentine’s Day?
With songs like this:
And songs like this:
And by starting the season of friendship season at Dispatched Divorcée. We have some fun stuff in store for you!
Which song is your favorite? Are there any songs that we missed?
