Whether it’s a power suit that makes you feel invincible, or a class you’ve always wanted to take, or a tattoo that serves as a reminder of all you’ve endured, investing in yourself is the best money you’ll spend.
There are the obvious educational and professional investments – whether that’s enrolling in additional training, signing up for a course in something new, or going back to school for another degree – spending money on skills that will make you more marketable, along with allowing you to flex your brain – is one option. We don’t advise going into debt while pursuing these, but if you do, student loan debt is considered the “good kind”.
I got divorced in the middle of massage school, which I was warned about before starting. The joke is that people either get a divorce or change their name in massage school. I still wanted to finish but was worried about paying for the second half of my education. Instead of dropping out, I applied for and received a student loan that allowed me to pay for tuition, supplies and a large portion of my living arrangements. That money relieved some of the financial stress I was feeling about my program, gave me space to focus on my studies and enabled me to finish my education.
Why investing in yourself matters…
Investing in you might look like dropping some money on an outfit that you feel powerful in. An outfit that you’ll be able to rock and wear for important events. Spending a bit more for something you love, something that will bring you joy, and something that you can pull out of the closet when you need to tap into that power is worth every cent. Clothes have the power to transform. Sometimes if you dress the part, it becomes real. Or at least feels more real. That’s the power of cosplay.

Perhaps you want to put money back into your health and wellness. It’s never been more important to take care of yourself. Investing in activities that will help both your physical and mental health bring serious dividends that you’ll be feeling for years. Maybe it’s therapy or a gym membership or new athletic gear, but knowing that your money is working towards helping you heal is the ultimate sign of wealth.
Whatever you decide to do in your quest for self-improvement and discovery, remember to do so with only your best interests and desires in mind. And give yourself permission. You’ve got this.
