Top 10 most inspiring pop culture friendships

In honor of Galentine’s Day, we thought it would be fun to share and celebrate some of the most inspiring female friendships. You know the ones. We picked a list of our top ten faves, mixing the fictional ones with the real, for a bit of fun. Let us know which of yours made it on the list and which ones you would add.

Our favorite pop culture friendships…

1. Romy and Michelle’s High School Reunion – and the upcoming sequel!

Romy and Michelle were loyal friends in a time when many movies didn’t feature the adventures of women beyond chasing men. The story of their friendship, and how much it helps them navigate the world, holds up to many rewatches and soon, the next chapter of their lives together will arrive in a much-anticipated sequel.

2. Naomi Watts and Nicole Kidman.

These Australian buddies met while filming a movie together in 1991, before either had achieved success, and have been friends ever since. They vacation together and support one another, both professionally and personally. Their friendship is going on forty years now and showing no signs of letting up.

3. Leslie and Ann from Parks & Rec.

Leslie Knope is the originator of Galentine’s Day so we couldn’t leave her off the list. She knew the importance of celebrating female friendships and loved nothing more than complimenting her BFF, Ann, any chance she could. And really, what’s better than waffles with your favorite women?

4. Amy and Molly from Booksmart.

Amy and Molly give us an example of the kind of friendship that we all wanted in high school…someone to have our back, to be our hypewoman, and to reassure us that everything was going to be okay. Not to mention, a friend who will stay up all night with us and hug us when it feels like it’s all falling apart. The laughs and dancing don’t hurt either.

5. The (Dixie) Chicks.

When these three musicians and friends decided to start a band together, it was only natural that they would include Chicks in the name. Two of the band members are sisters and grew up playing music together, but it was going through hard times that their friendship was really put to the test. They stuck it out and have come through the trials with a stronger bond and better music.

6. Cher and Dionne from Clueless.

The friendship between these two provides plenty of laughs, but also an excellent example of what happens when women prioritize their relationships with friends over relationships with the opposite sex. Of course, boyfriends play a role in the movie, but it’s definitely a lesser one, and is often played for laughs.

7. Rebecca and Keely from Ted Lasso.

These two could easily have been pitted against one another as beautiful strong women often are. Instead, the main female characters on Ted Lasso made a more interesting choice by having Rebecca and Keely become friends. They supported one another and shared their expertise in different fields with each other freely.

8. Busy Phillips and Michelle Williams.

We watched them as friends on Dawson’s Creek and love that they are still friends. Hollywood can be a fickle place, both for finding romance and steady employment, so it’s heartwarming to see these two stick by each other through it all. Plus, who wouldn’t want to take their BFF as their date to an awards show?

9. Jen and Judy from Dead to Me.

This show puts the spotlight on female friendship. Jen and Judy meet in a grief support group but it quickly becomes their burgeoning relationship that provides the support that both women are seeking. Although they get wrapped up in some less-than-legal activities, it’s their friendship that helps them both stay afloat.

10. Annie, Brenda and Elise from The First Wives Club.

We can’t write a best-of friendship list without our favorite trio. Annie, Brenda, and Elise are part of a four-girl group of friends from college who grew apart over the years. The movie opens with them reuniting at the funeral of their fourth friend. The best part of this movie is that these women find each other again when they need each other the most–during divorce.
